Day 09: A song that you can dance to

Um, how's about ALL OF THEM? No, not really. But I do find several of Ayu's songs danceable, especially some off My Story and NEXT LEVEL. However, Party Queen seems to be Ayu's dance album-baby, at least the first part of it. So I'll share what I think is the most danceable track: "Shake It."
Shake It

In second place is "Lady Dynamite" from her Rock'n'Roll Circus album. Woooo gay club PV

Day 08: A song that you know all the words to

Nooooone of them, sobsobsob. Seriously, Ayu's lyrics are hard, especially for someone who doesn't put a lot of stock in lyrics. The ones I can sort of follow along on are usually my favorites and have probably already been mentioned on this list. A few of the ones I know better are   "(don't) Leave Me Alone," "Memorial Address," "STEP You," and "Sexy Little Things."

One song I do know a bit better than average is "my name's WOMEN," another of my favorites complete with kickass PV. The lyrics really interest me, which is why I wanted to get to know them better. Unfortunately, due to my lower vocal range, I can't actually sing this song very well in karaoke. Ah well.

URGH, I can't figure out how to get this video to embed properly. Click the link to watch it! The actual video starts around 1:50. Japanese lyrics always have sort of fishy translations; took me a bit to find one that made sense.

"my name's WOMEN"
Shiny things, cute things--
The things I like are still the same
But being cool and being tough
Have become more important lately

The times, you see, have changed so much
But why do I still hear such words as
"Tears are women's weapons?"

We don't cry easily
We are not just whiny and dependent
We are not just dressed-up dolls

We have our weak sides
We are not always smiling
Don't forget
That we don't exist for your convenience

Though there are certainly nights
When we have pain in our chest,
It might be true
That when we get hurt,
We can become even more gentle and strong

With that all-knowing look on your face
Do you think you have controlled everything?
We are not just dolls who dream all day long

With that satisfied look on your face
Do you think you have deceived us well?
Do remember
That we are not such pure and simple beings

Day 07: A song that reminds you of a certain event

In all honesty, Ayu's music doesn't have any connection to any certain event for me. I think that's a good thing, because when a certain artist or song is connected to an event or time for me, it's more often than not a bad one. All of Ayu's music is good for me.

But. Since I'm loathe to leave an entry blank, I'll put in something from Ayu's Rock 'n' Roll Circus album, since that was the one released while I was in Japan and whose concert I got to see.

"Microphone"

The beginning of the concert. ELECTRIFYING. Can't wait to see her from a real seat this year. 8DDD

Day 06: A song that reminds you of somewhere

Ayu's music doesn't really remind me of any place in particular, probably because I've been listening to her for so long and for so many years. If I had to pick something, though, it'd be the car, because that's where a lot of my listening got done, both with my sister and by myself. Again, no certain song reminds me of the car, but I can share a couple that I clearly remember spending a lot of time listening to in the car.

"STEP You" (also I just love this PV)

No particular Ayu song reminds me of anyone, but listening to the albums My Story, Rainbow, and Memorial Address reminds me of high school and my friends who introduced me to Ayu then. So today sees one song from each of those albums! They're not necessarily my favorite tracks from each, but they are the ones that remind me the most of high school.

Day 04: A song that makes you sad

Ayu's most moving song for me is "Memorial Address," which I included in a previous post. Next up is "Ballad," another inherently sad song. I cried when I saw it in concert; there was a whole play with people dying going on as she sang it, so that's not a huge surprise. I do really love this song, though.

So I recently bought Ayumi Hamasaki's Moste Recente Albume, Party Queen. While it's not her best, I actually really rather like it, with a few exceptions, of course (my friends can testify that there is very nearly no CD that I will listen to without skipping a few tracks). Anyway, to celebrate the reawakening of my Ayu-Standom, I'm going to do a 30 Day Ayu Challenge I found on Twitter. At least until I forget to do it. I LUUUUURVE YOU AYUUUUUU

I was bored at work the other day, so I came up with quotations for that Movie Quote Meme thing. Again. Yes. But I did it without looking up quotations for anything, so that's a plus, maybe? Anyway, you should answer my things. Because. Have I included movies from previous lists? Heavens, yes! Are most of them animated? Heavens, yes! Not all of them, though. Do your best.

Take a quotation from each of your ten favorite movies. List them below. When someone guesses the quote correctly, cross it off the list. Leave a comment with your answers. And NO CHEATING (Googling).

1. "I thought we'd start off with a light salad and see how we feel after that." apneatic_melody said Kronk from The Emperor's New Groove

2. "I told you a wolf's head could still bite." apneatic_melody said Princess Mononoke

3. "I still thought you were going to save my life."

4. "Nice pictures, but I prefer a good Western myself."

5. "Chocolate coating makes it go down easier."

6. "Every holo-date I have been on has been a virtual disaster!"

7. "I'm gettin' kind of fond of you, kid. Not that I want to pick out curtains or anything." unquietspirit said Genie from Aladdin

8. "I don't want love. And I don't want you."

9. "Keep movin', Junior." michechan didn't say anything, but she knows it's Meg from Hercules

10. "Yeah, and if I weren't pro bono, I'd want my money back, too!"

EXTRA POINTS if you include the name of the character who said it.

It's been a while since I've written here, huh. I meant to get to bed about an hour ago, but I did that thing I'm so good at doing (staying up late even though I have no good reason to do so), and my mind's been all gloomy for the past few hours, anyway. I thought I'd just write for a bit to try to alleviate some of this tension.

I'm not entirely sure what's making me so down at the moment. Part of it, I'm sure, is my typical I-don't-want-Monday-to-come cheerlessness. I don't care much for my Monday school, and while it ends up being all right when I'm actually there, my mind dreads it as hard as it possibly can, making Sundays rather difficult to deal with. I'm scared of disapproval or reprimand from the JTEs I work with on Mondays, even though it's only happened two or three times. I can't get myself to not care. Elementary JTEs are often stern stuff. I also don't particularly love the kids I teach; elementary in general really isn't my forte. This particular school is big, too, meaning I have to teach four classes of the same damn lesson, and one of the classes is particularly difficult to handle. I feel like there's no wiggle room at this school, so I get scared to go there. Again, I always feel like I'd worried for no reason once I'm actually at the school, but the days leading up to Mondays always feel like a losing game of Tetris. I forget, until I'm out of school on Mondays, that time actually continues past Monday.

Something else that's been bothering me is the entire subject of gender roles and ensuing topics. Anyone who's friends with me on facebook may have noticed the increase of postings and articles concerning the matter throughout this past week. Reading and learning just makes me realize how little I know, and it all makes me wonder about the kind of person I am. I feel like parts of myself contradict things I supposedly believe in. I also wonder why I haven't done anything to further a cause, done something to raise awareness and make change. Maybe it's because I haven't gotten angry enough. If I weren't so averse to going to grad school, I'd consider the idea of going back to school to research gender studies with some serious thought. I almost want to be an activist. I need a better focus, though. I've found the focus I most want to try with acting, and that's voice. I still need to work and study more toward that, though.

And all the while, I have this great job in Japan. In Japan. I feel like being in Japan right now is holding me back. Which is silly. I enjoy my life and my job (for the most part) here, and I wouldn't trade it for all the indecision I'd be facing back home at the moment. But being in a different country does prevent me from acting where I'd like. I am doing what I can as far as learning things here (though admittedly, I could do more), but I don't know what I can do beyond, at least concerning what I want and what I believe in.

And now I've gotten vague. Well, time to try to sleep again.

What is something that just doesn't make sense to you?

Japanese school systems

elizabeth

Why don't these children have the fear of god instilled in them like I did when I was their age?! When I was given an assignment in class, I did it; I didn't put my head on my desk and ignore it. If I did, I'd certainly get a few words from the teacher, which was usually more than enough to get me moving. But these teachers don't do anything about it. If a kid doesn't want to write because that kid doesn't like English, that's somehow totally okay. UM. I hated math class, but that didn't mean I didn't do my work. I detested (and was bad at) chemistry, but that didn't mean I just blew off my teacher. When I was asked a question in class, I answered it. If I didn't know the answer, I'd feel bad.

I'm still feeling out the Japanese school system, and I know that answering aloud in class is a pretty tremendous challenge for Japanese kids, but COME ON. I just--I just can't. Maybe it's because I'm new, or because I'm a native English speaker, or SOMETHING, but the kids this week have been silent and unmotivated all week. I've just been doing my self-introduction, but honestly, I haven't gotten a damn thing out of them.

My frustration is fueled by the fact that I'm just an assistant teacher, just a supplement to the lessons. I can't discipline, I can't really lead, I can't do anything a real teacher does. I realize, fully and completely, that a huge part of this program is to just give Japanese people good experiences with foreigners as well as to take back my own good experiences with Japanese people, but. Honestly. In these schools, what good can I even DO?

Maybe I'm being way too fatalistic since this is only my first week of teaching. But Jesus Christ, kids, will if KILL you to try to speak some goddamn English? I'm asking them questions, and half of them don't even fill out the worksheet I passed out. If I could, I'd make them all turn them in to me for grades, but I don't think I have that power. I don't know if junior high kids even get homework.

Ugh. I don't know.

In other news, there is a girl in one of my classes named "Ai Takahashi," written the same way and everything. What.

First question is a stupid one. Or rather, an inconsiderate one. My mother does not cook. My father does. His specialty is pasta. Some people weren't raised by mothers. Some people were raised by aunts or uncles or grandparents. Ask what their specialties are. Try again.

That said. Burger King cheeseburgers will always make me salivate. And okonomiyaki. And buffalo waaaaangs.

I think I'm pretty much over it.

I was excited, for a bit, about being able to decorate my apartment how I wanted, keep things wherever I liked, invite people over as I pleased. Being in control of my own life is pleasing.

Unfortunately, it doesn't make up for the loss of regular intervals of human contact. I see people often enough, sometimes too much, but when I finally get to have my much-craved-for alone time, I often quickly get bored and lonely. I wish I had roommates. Having roommates at school was really pretty nice, despite how often Anne and I might have gotten to each other, solely because there was always someone else around. We didn't have to be talking or spending time together, but it was just a comfort to know that if I wanted friendly company, I could have it. The same thing went on when I was home for the summer; I could talk to my sister whenever I wanted.

I guess I just hope I'll get used to being here soon. I keep finding myself wishing I could have my dull, familiar life in St. Louis back, and that's no good, since I'm definitely here for at least a year.

Maybe I'll just take a trip to Osaka.

By the bye, I just realized I'd forgotten to include the actual link to the Japan blog I've started. Quite stupid, really.

Herro. I'm busy living and working in Japan right now, but I wish I had my friends around. I wonder how well I'll do this year. It took me about two months to settle in last year, but I think I'm doing a bit better right now. My apartment is coming along, although there are dishes EVERYWHERE that need to be washed before I can even think about using them. On my one tiny burner. Imma see if I can pawn any of the pans or something off onto one of the other new girls in my building.

I feel okay about being in Japanese society when I'm not really thinking about it, but I keep reading all the stuff JET gave me about first impressions and always being professional, blah blah, and I get super nervous again. If I have to be on my guard all the time, I'm going to get pretty damn tired really fast. I don't want to have to be so cautious all the time. I really miss being a student.

On the up side, I'm getting on with several of the teachers at my base school, and I've met several of the students as well. I've been hanging around the art club, so I hope they won't get tired of me. The vice principal at my base school, though, has a habit of talking to me in Japanese, and when I don't catch what he says right away, he tries saying it in super broken English, not necessarily because he wants to try out English, but because he thinks I just don't understand. It's MADDENING.

Something that's a little hard for me is that everyone here keeps INVITING me places. The ALTs living around here are all very nice, and they've been going out of their way to make the new people feel welcome, but most of them are all so social, and it just sort of rubs me the wrong way. If I can hang out with people once or twice a week, I'm good, I've got my fix. But it seems like every other night these people have something going on. I just want to lock my door and not answer my phone sometimes. Not that I don't welcome the company, but I really need breaks from socializing. If we were just going to someone's house to hang out, fine. But going out? UUUUNGH THE EFFORT IT TAKES ME.

A friend I met at the orientation we had in Tokyo is coming to visit me this weekend, so I hope that goes well. I have a few days off next week for the Obon festival, so that'll be a nice rest before September swoops in and kills me.

I wonder how long I can keep this up.
